Grammy Award-winning singer Anthony David headlined an incredible music showcase that featured the best music of the ’80s and ’90s. Due to the current state of R&B music (becoming nearly extinct) Tru-Bud and Scales 925 took it upont themselves to create the “Real Love Music Experience” every Tuesday night. Since November of 2015, an artist from the 80’s or 80’s era has headlined the evening preceded by up-and-coming and aspiring R&B artists.
Past headliners have included Q Parker from 112, RL from the group NEXT, Bobby V, and this week Tony Terry, the “When I’m With You” R&B crooner will top off the night. Seems appropriate since this is February, the month Black history is celebrated, but best known as the month for lovers.
If you are an artist and you want to hang out at showcases where you may run into someone that can further your career; it pays to be smart and selective as there are showcases popping up all over the city. It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a reputable or productive event, but you have to sometimes examine the type of music veterans certain events attract.
One of the vets spotted at this event was Greggory Smith of SESAC, associate director, writer, publisher relations. Turns out television writer-comic Vanessa Fraction is his cousin. Smith came over from his SESAC event with his talent ,Final Draft;; and Deb Antney was there checking out new talent as well.
Andrew Prince III is always a very pivotal part of the evening as he is responsible for booking the acts for the showcase. Currently, Prince is a concert promoter, the co-founder of Prince Management Group and he worked with Gerald Levert for over 10 years. It’s important to know the real people in this business who have put in the time, and have the experience and the connections you need to validate you as an artist that’s willing to put in the work.
We weren’t surprised David hit the stage and brought out a couple of surprise artists to accompany him. Mylah Music and David sang a duet and the crowd went crazy when Algebra joined him to perform “Forever More.”
