In addition to being one of our generation’s biggest artists and visionaries, Kanye West has undoubtedly been at the center of much controversy. Take for instance his recent Twitter activity and absurd “Saturday Night Live” meltdown. Not to mention the emotions that surged following a poor reception at his New York Fashion Week show at Madison Square Garden earlier this month. While everyone seems to have an opinion on the potential cause of his outbursts – the inability to cope with the loss of his mother, drug use, publicity stunts, and mental disorders are among the most popular – we now have the insight of professional psychologist and registered physician Dr. Phil.
On Monday, Feb. 22, during an appearance on “The Late Late Show with James Corden,” Phil, sitting beside fellow guests Cristin Milioti and Bow Wow (real name Shad Moss), was asked his take on the matter.
“You can’t be that wrong that many times unless you’re working at it,” said the talk show host, suggesting that Yeezy’s controversial actions are simply a ploy for attention. “Here we are talking about it, so it’s working.”
Meanwhile Moss, who mentioned he’s met West on numerous occasions in the past, voiced his opinion in defense of the controversial artist.
“I think he’s just an artist who’s very, very passionate – like over-passionate – about what he does,” insisted the fellow rapper. “So I just think we’re dealing with an artist who is very passionate, who believes in what he does, but he might just go about it in a, you know, a different way.”
But it was Dr. Phil, who quickly chimed back in, arguing that perhaps the bigger issue is society’s unceasing need to post and share everything via social media – creating user abuse.
“Everybody thinks stuff sometimes – you know you’ll think something that’s like really stupid – but we’re in a society now, we’re in a generation now, where everybody thinks you gotta have an audience for everything,” he said.
And while it’s easy for some to turn a blind eye to West’s recent behavior in light of his greatness, we have to admit, something is different. Be it publicity, mental health issues, substance abuse, or just pure genius at work, we need him to get it together.
