Elton John slammed Janet Jackson in a new Rolling Stone interview. As one who prides himself on leaving everything he’s got on stage, it’s no surprise that the musician would be sensitive about those who do not live up to his standards. “You know, f–king music magazines writing a review of Janet Jackson saying, ‘This is the greatest show — four and a half stars.’ It’s f–king lip-synched! Hello! That’s not a show!” said John. “I’d rather go and see a drag queen. F— off.”
While John’s comment may feel a bit out of the blue, as you may recall, Jackson is currently on a world tour in support of her 11th studio album, Unbreakable, which recently received a round of rave reviews from critics.
Of course this isn’t the first time the “Tiny Dancer” singer has made similar lip-syncing claims about top entertainers. John dissed Madonna in 2002 when he said that “Die Another Day” was the “worst” James Bond song he’d ever heard. Two years later, he called her out onstage at the Q Awards. “Madonna, best live act? F— off,” he told the audience. “Since when has lip-synching been live? Sorry about that, but I think everyone who lip-synchs on stage in public when you pay like 75 quid to see them, should be shot. Thank you very much. That’s me off her Christmas card list, but do I give a toss? No.”
Then, in 2012, he trashed the “Material Girl” prior to her Super Bowl halftime performance. “Her tour is a disaster and it couldn’t happen to a bigger c–t. If Madonna had any common sense, she would have made a record like ‘Ray of Light,’ stayed away from the dance stuff and just been a great pop singer and made great pop records, which she does brilliantly. But no, she had to prove that she was like …” The two finally buried the hatchet later that year after crossing paths in France.
Needless to say, John appears to be remorseful about going hard on the “True Blue” singer, telling Rolling Stone, “I say what I feel — I probably went too far with Madonna, and I got very personal and I wrote her — she was very gracious.”
Meanwhile, Jackson has not yet responded to John’s allegations that she lip-synchs.
