Girl Scouts win big at 2016 Oscars

Girl Scouts of America CEO Anna Maria Chávez, the first Latina to run the Girl Scouts organization, has something to be proud about after last night’s 88th Academy Awards, the annual Hollywood affinity event that is plagued this year and last by its lack of diversity.

Chris Rock hosted the event and his daughter’s Girl Scout troop collected $65,000 in sales and donations during the event.

Dressed in their distinctive vests adorned with colorful badges of honor, the Girl Scouts of Los Angeles peppered the audience filled with A-listers Kate Winslet, Tina Fey, Matt Damon and John Legend to cop their boxes of Samoas and Thin Mints.

“Are you going to deny my princesses some cookies?” Rock asked the actors. He shouted-out first-time best actor Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio: “You made $30 million — come on.”

Under Chavez, a former lawyer, the Girl Scouts is a 21st century organization. For the first time last December, Girl Scouts began to sell the iconic cookies digitally. In 2015, its young members sold 2.5 million boxes of cookies, or about $10 million worth, through a project called “Digital Cookie.”

All Girl Scout cookies have to be ordered through the organization’s Digital Cookie app that only scouts have. The Girl Scout can process credit and debit card sales on her smartphone. Anyone can can download the Girl Scout Cookie Finder app, which makes it easy to find cookie booth locations in your neighborhood and is usually just a table set up temporarily in front of a retail location such as a supermarket.

Rock revealed how much the Girl Scouts raised: $65,243, with over 13,000 boxes sold. The actor was collecting money for his daughters, Zahra Savannah and Lola Simone Rock.

At last year’s celebration, Ellen DeGeneres gave out pizza. For the entertainers who have been on strict diets prepping for the red carpet in order to flaunt their trimmed and toned trophy figures, the snacks were a big treat.
