G-Dep hit it big as an artist on Sean “Diddy” Combs’ legendary Bad Boy Records in the late ’90s.

He saw the release of his critically acclaimed debut album, Child Of The Ghetto, in 2001. Featuring hits such as “Let’s Get It” and “Special Delivery”, Dep looked to be on his way to rap stardom. After a few more notable guest appearances his career seemed to stall and he was let go from his contract with Bad Boy. In 2007 he released a joint album with fellow former Bad Boy artist Loon that received little fanfare before finally releasing his sophomore album, Ghetto Legend, in September 2010, then his life took a most unexpected turn.

In December 2010, Dep, born Trevell Coleman, walked into a New York City police station and confessed to a murder he committed in 1993. With the details given, authorities were quickly able to match Dep’s story with the unsolved murder of 32-year-old John Henkel. According to Dep, he attempted to rob Henkel at gunpoint before Henkel tried to wrestle the weapon away from him resulting in Henkel being shot three times in the chest. Dep then fled the scene and threw the gun into the nearby East River.

The rapper later told family and friends that he had been riddled with guilt since the incident, even while enjoying his career in rap, and could no longer take the pressure. He was convicted of second-degree murder and given a sentence of 15 years to life.
