Musiq Soulchild was in Chicago recently for Dedry Jones’ event, The Experience, to promote his most recent release Life On Earth at The DuSable Museum of African American History on the South Side of Chicago. Cars were lined up for blocks signaling an event where every single seat in the house was sold. It has been a while since Musiq has released anything under his well-known moniker. This night proved to be eye-opening and extremely informative.

The earlier part of the discussion focused on Musiq’s introduction to the industry. The first song he ever released was placed on the soundtrack of Nutty Professor II: The Klumps and was later released as his lead single from Aijuswanaseing. Musiq spoke candidly about his introduction to the industry and how hip-hop has such a strong influence on what he does. He mentioned that his goal was to create “mainstream hip-hop soul music.” Musiq is quite proficient when it comes to writing about love. He had this to say about his song “Love,” “If [it] came to you and sat in your kitchen and you are like, “Hey Love, what’s up?” It’s actually a conversation with love.”

As much as Musiq sings about love, he does not want to be pigeonholed as being a singer who tackles only one subject matter. His stint as The Husel was an example that he wants to be viewed as an artist with many layers. His most recent project, Life on Earth is a project that moves closer to what Musiq wants to convey, and that is a pure artist. He performed his lead single “I Do” to the packed house and they loved it.  One of Musiq’s fans, Erica Williams, said: “After this experience I have a whole new love for Musiq.”

Musiq stayed afterward to greet his fans. It was an enlightening event. We are looking forward to the next Experience.
