Police have announced the arrest of former NFL star Dana Stubblefield on serious charges of raping a mentally disabled woman in 2015. Police have stated that Stubblefield used the babysitting service citysitter.com to arrange a meeting with the victim. He allegedly promised to pay the woman for gas, mileage and time she would spend on the interview. After the interview, the 31-year-old victim forgot to get the cash from Stubblefield. He then texted her to return for $80. It was when she returned that the alleged attack took place by Stubblefield.
The victim is described as having physical and mental disabilities and was vulnerable to assault. After the assault, the woman went to the Morgan Hill Police Department and reported the attack. She underwent a Sexual Assault Response Team Exam (SART) that is given to victims or rape and a crime lab confirmed that the DNA of Stubblefield was recovered. Ken Rosenfeld, attorney for Stubblefield, stated, “Stubblefield is being unfairly targeted due to his celebrity and wealth by someone with full motivation to lie. The clear motivation here is money.” The attorney maintains that sex between the two was consensual and further stated that Stubblefield “passed a lie detector test and plans to present a full, vigorous defense against these allegations.”
During his 11 years in the NFL, Stubblefield played for the San Francisco 49ers, Washington Redskins and the Oakland Raiders. He was named a 3-time Pro-Bowler and was the 1993 NFL defensive rookie of the year. Stubblefield has been charged by police with rape by force, rape of a victim incapable of giving consent, oral copulation by force, oral copulation with a person incapable of giving consent and false imprisonment. Bail for the former star athlete has been set at $260K and he could face up to 16 years in prison if convicted.
