Bobby Brown has been all over the news this week thanks to his revealing new interview with “20/20,” in which he discussed everything from his thoughts on Nick Gordon’s alleged role in Bobbi Kristina and Whitney Houston’s deaths to his claims that he once had sex with a ghost. However, Brown wasn’t only sharing secrets with “20/20” this week. He also spoke with Us Weekly about his new memoir, Every Little Step, and claimed that the rumors about Houston’s sexuality were true.
For fans who don’t remember, Houston was plagued with rumors back in the ’80s and ’90s that she was involved in a secret lesbian relationship with her former assistant-turned-creative director and best friend, Robyn Crawford, whom she met when they were both teens working at a community center in East Orange, New Jersey.
The rumors slowed down, though, when Houston married Brown in 1992 and gave birth to Bobbi Kristina in 1993. However, even after Houston’s death in 2012, many were still questioning whether or not the initial rumors about her sexuality were true.
Well, in his latest interview, Brown opened up about his new book, in which he directly addresses Houston’s sexuality rumors and confirms that his former wife was attracted to women and that she and Crawford were in a romantic relationship with each other.
“I know,” Brown said in the interview. “We were married for 14 years. There are some things we talked about that were personal to us.”
Despite Houston’s same-sex attraction, Brown claims that Houston was also attracted to men and definitely attracted to him.
“I’m a man and she was attracted to me!” Brown said.
Brown claims that part of the reason Houston didn’t open up publicly about her sexuality or relationship with Crawford is because she was pressured by her family, especially her mother, Cissy Houston, to remain in the closet. In a 2013 interview with Oprah, Cissy told the media mogul that she didn’t like the rumors about her daughter being with Crawford, nor was she fond of Crawford. She also claimed that she “absolutely” would’ve disapproved if Houston would’ve told her that she’s gay.
However, Brown claims that Crawford was a positive influence in her life and that things might have been drastically different had Crawford not been pushed to the edges of Houston’s life.
“I really feel that if Robyn was accepted into Whitney’s life, Whitney would still be alive today,” Brown says. “She didn’t have close friends with her anymore.”
