MC Lyte is currently on tour with Love Jones The Musical along with Raheem DeVaughn, Musiq Soulchild and Marsha Ambrosius. The nationwide tour just wrapped its Detroit leg this past weekend. The musical is definitely making waves in the markets it’s already been to, and will soon to be in a city near you. However, Lyte is also making waves around the U.S. in a different capacity. Lyte is a huge community leader and supports some dope organizations and initiatives around the nation.
Rolling out caught up with the female rap pioneer to discuss some of her community involvement and other ventures, including new music. Read below to see what Lyte had to say about the wonderful organizations she continues to support and when her fans can expect to hear new music.
You are definitely an inspiration and I think people are going to be excited about seeing you in the musical. You continue to inspire and make a difference in people’s lives daily. Tell us about some of your community leadership endeavors.
Certainly, we have Hip Hop Sisters, the foundation, and with that, we’ve been really able to change lives and propel folk into areas where they may not have been so successful, so quickly. So, with #EducateOurMen being our signature initiative, we’ve been able to send young men off to further their education. We’ve formed a partnership with Dillard University and we’ve sent five young men and one young woman to further their education on $50K scholarships. And it feels amazing to be able to do that. And of course we have our mentoring program where we’ve partnered with Honey Shine Inc., Tracy and Alonzo Mourning’s organization and we’ve opened up two chapters in Los Angeles, and that is a mentoring program for third and fourth graders where we provide mentorship weekly, so that’s exciting. And of course, we have our financial literacy component where all year round, we do women and relationship sessions where we talk about your man and your money, how to get him and how to keep him!
That sounds like something all women need to attend! Is that the same event as the W.E.A.L.T.H. Experience that you hosted at the beginning of the year?
No, the W.E.A.L.T.H. Experience is actually held in South Beach Miami, Florida and we’re doing again in 2017, Jan. 5 through 8. I will certainly say it is life altering. It causes expansion. At www.WEALTHExperience.info is where one can find out all the information on it, but I would say anyone interested in coming better log on immediately because we’re sold out and we’re holding a waiting list now.
What else is going on with MC Lyte? Can we expect to hear new music soon?
Absolutely, you are going to hear new music! I’d say get the MC Lyte app, there’s actually music there, right now. And then there will be more music released, I think they’re looking for an October release of a new album and it’s called SpotLYTE. It has some guest appearances on there. And I would just say stay tuned.
