A criminal in Chicago will think twice before he attempts to rape another woman. During the early morning hours on Oct. 17, Angela Ferguson, 58, was awakened by a man who broke into her home.

According to Fox 32 in Chicago, suspect Dorval Grice, 30, was able to get into Ferguson’s home by climbing through a window. Grice jumped on top of Ferguson and demanded sex while pulling her hair. He then began punching her in the face repeatedly and telling her that he was the Grim Reaper. Ferguson decided to fight back and hit Grice with a beer stein. She was eventually able to push him out of her room and close the door.

However, Grice kicked the door open and attempted to sexually assault Ferguson again. She decided to grab a crow bar from under her bed and began swinging at Grice. Ferguson hit Grice with the crowbar several times while he charged at her. But one final blow to the head caused Grice to fall unconscious. Ferguson ran from her home and called 911, but no police came to help. Unfortunately, it took three calls to 911 for a police officer to finally show up.

When the officers arrived, they arrested and took Grice into custody.

Ferguson’s bravery should be commended, but the slow response by police reveals another troubling issue. If Ferguson wasn’t able to beat her attacker, she could have suffered because it took three calls to 911 for the police to finally arrive and investigate the scene. It’s another example of the Chicago Police Department’s ineptitude when dealing with urban communities. They have been slow to help citizens in need, and have used abusive tactics when dealing with individuals who don’t serve as a threat. The level of corruption proves that an overhaul must occur. Because honorable citizens such as Angela Ferguson are forced to fight for themselves.

Grace has been charged with home invasion and aggravated sexual assault.
