Meet Deddeh Howard, a beautiful Black model and med student who is single-handedly tackling racial bias in the fashion industry. In a photo series titled “Black Mirror,” (displayed on her Instagram account), the leggy Howard, who hails from Liberia, re-creates famous fashion campaigns featuring White models, in hopes of inspiring anyone who’s been made to feel less than due to the color of their skin.
“Growing up in Africa, I knew nothing about Black and White, we’re all equal, it was United we stand! At least that’s what my parents thought me and that’s what I believe in. I believe we can be whoever we want to be, so don’t let anyone tell you’re not what you want to be. If they can do it! So can you. It’s about time we stand up together..Dream and Believe. I’m personally fighting for more diversity especially more Black models to be seen on billboards, movies, TV commercials, advertisements, etc., for us all,” she wrote via Instagram.
In the campaign, the 27-year-old puts a spin on ads by brands like Guess (starring Gigi Hadid), Calvin Kelin (featuring a topless Kendall Jenner), and Vivara (spotlighting supermodel Gisele Bündchen).
