In general, no one starts out wanting to be an addict; addiction is often something that can sneak up on a person. For some, it starts when a doctor gives a prescription to help with very real pain that devolves into needing pain pills with increasing frequency on a daily basis for an extended period of time. That type of chronic pain was a contributing factor in the deaths of music legends Michael Jackson and Prince. There is also the chronic pain of depression or feelings of hopelessness that lead to habitual behavior and self-medication with hard drugs.

Often friends and family members grow concerned as addictive behavior continues and the now evolving addict states, “I got this,” oblivious to their crisis. Richie Supa, award-winning singer/songwriter and former touring member of Aerosmith wrote a song about it called “I Got This,” which has over 2 million views online. The images in the video are powerful and show how addiction is multiracial and multicultural. It is part of the Face the Music Foundation’s continuing outreach to raise awareness and understanding about addiction, provide the means for struggling addicts to get clean and sober and to help newly recovering addicts develop the tools to maintain long-term recovery.
