How Kanye West is using ‘Sunday Service’ to save himself from himself

Over the past few years, people have been asking, “What’s going on with Kanye?” Always a boisterous personality who used his ego to motivate himself against the naysayers, Kanye’s commentary and decisions caused many to question his well-being.

In May 2018, Kanye caused a stir after conducting a chaotic interview on TMZ where he spoke about his support of President Trump and saying the infamous line of
slavery being a choice. Kanye faced more backlash after wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat during an appearance on “Saturday Night Live” in September of 2018 and visiting the White House and praising Trump during a press conference one month later.

It seemed as if Kanye was spiraling out of control and he was on the verge of losing everything that he worked so hard to build. Before the beginning of 2019, Kanye would take some time away by making fewer public appearances and steering clear of interviews.

Kanye emerged in February 2019 by hosting the first “Sunday Service” in Calabasas, California. The weekly service features a choir and live band that performs gospel songs and spiritually-driven remixes of secular music.

On the day Kanye’s “Sunday Service” made its way to New Birth church near Atlanta, the choir and band surrounded the rapper and his choir conductor, Jason White. Unlike most choirs that sing while facing the congregation, the “Sunday Service” choir sings while facing Kanye. It serves as a form of personal healing for a man who appears to be seeking a path to right his wrongs.

“How we going to do the least when he did the most,” Kanye told the congregation. “I’ve seen him work miracles in my life. The Devil presents so many shiny objects. I’ve seen everything the Devil could have showed you [such as] cars, jewelry, houses. And I’ll tell you, nothing beats God and a sound mind.”
