“The Orlando Police Department has a policy that addresses the arrest of a minor and our initial finding shows the policy was not followed,” Rolón said, according to CBS47 KSEE24. “As a grandparent of three children less than 11 years old, this is very concerning to me.”
The unnamed girl’s grandmother, Meralyn Kirkland, teared up as she shared her disbelief that a child so young would be put in the back of a police cruiser and taken to a detention center. Kirkland added that the granddaughter suffers from a condition called sleep apnea that she says impacts her behavior.
Rolón added that the arrest was nixed when a supervisor learned of the incident, and the child was immediately returned to the school.
