In the 1970s and ’80s, Butler wrote books that told stories of Black culture, which featured elements of science fiction and fantasy.
Super Nova Rocket, an AfroPunk attendee from St. Louis, shared his thoughts on the correlation between AfroPunk and Afrofuturism.
“Afrofuturism is the next leap in evolution for the planet when the [Black] race goes back to their genius mind frame and our creativity will manifest,” he said. “AfroPunk is a way of expression. With AfroPunk, it combines fashion, music, and art, and it’s a radical statement.”
