Cyntoia Brown-Long explains how any woman can fall victim to sex trafficking

Mentally, what happens to a victim when they are involved in the world of sex trafficking?

I was just so desperate to feel like I belong somewhere. There was nothing that he [McGlothen] could have told me to do that I would have said no [to] because I just wanted him to want me. I was that desperate. And when you’re in that situation, you quickly see that nothing you do is ever good enough. Your best is never good enough. And even when you know life is being sucked out of you, you stay there because you just have this hope that it’s going to change and it’s going to get better.

How did you keep your faith while serving life in prison?

I wasn’t going to give up. There was always something that was telling me that I wasn’t going to do the rest of my life in prison. I know now that was the voice of God letting me know that he had a plan. He had other plans for me, and I just held on to that.

There are many young girls who are going through what you went through. Can you speak directly to them and offer some advice on how to get out of their predicament?

I want you to know that there are options for you. I know sometimes you might feel that you can’t see the other side of the situation that you’re in and you can’t see tomorrow. You can’t see it getting better, but it does get better. And there are people out there who love you, who will support you, who will help you.
