What advice do you have for aspiring designers?
Young designers want to do like 15-, 20-piece collections, but the thing is you don’t have to start big. You can start small. It’s OK to start with one or two pieces and then see how that works. Flip that money, make it work for you and reinvest it. In the long run, you’re gonna lose a lot more money than you’re gonna make because you just don’t know who your demographic might be.
Do your research on what you’re looking for. People are like, “Hey, where can I go buy fabric?” But if you just do the research, you’ll be able to find certain things that you’re looking for. It’s a lot of trial and error.
Contracts are important. No matter if that’s your friend or your family member, if it involves money, your idea, your brand, something you’re putting your name on, you need to put a contract on that. You just don’t want to put yourself in a position where anything can happen.
