NFL’s Peyton Manning sets up scholarships at 6 HBCUs; Doug Williams is shocked

The six HBCUs to have scholarships funded by Peyton Manning are:

Grambling State University. The aforementioned scholarship will be named after Doug Williams.


Tennessee State University. A scholarship is to be named after track legend Wilma Rudolph, the first woman to win three gold medals in the Olympics.

Dillard University. A scholarship is to be named on behalf of United Negro College Fund President Michael Lomax, who was also the university president.


Southern University. A scholarship to honor Hall of Fame wide receiver Harold Carmichael, who played for the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1970s. Carmichael told ESPN, “I feel the same as Doug when it comes to what Peyton’s foundation is doing with HBCUs. It’s really an honor to have my name on that scholarship.”

Fisk University. A scholarship is named after Reavis L. Mitchell Jr., who taught history at Fisk for more than 40 years.

Xavier University in New Orleans. Its scholarship is to be named after Norman Francis, who was awarded the Presidential Medal Of Freedom and was a major figure in the rebuilding efforts of the Crescent City after Hurricane Katrina. Francis served as president at the university for almost 50 years.
