What makes Barlow’s special and unique to the Black community?
Our ingredients definitely lend to our uniqueness. Barlow’s Foods original pancake mix is made with only four whole ingredients. With the primary ingredient being an organic unbleached, unenriched flour. This is a cleaner and healthier flour option, which gives pancakes and waffles made with our mix a clean taste and a very soft and fluffy consistency.
Barlow’s original pancake mix is a better option without compromis[ing] taste. We are not attempting to change the eating habits of our customers. Our products communicate to the consumer that you can still enjoy your traditional favorites, such as pancakes and waffles, but those pancakes and waffles can be made better for you.
Who or what inspired you to develop your product, and do you feel that you’ve fulfilled the purpose you were going for?
The idea of offering a pancake mix or food product initiated from my love of food and the desire to cook and create. … I had the desire to create a food product and once I narrowed it down to the initial product being a pancake mix, I was having a challenge in coming up with a name. I was literally sitting at my desk and came across a photo of my maternal grandfather. My grandfather’s name was Barlow and at that point things started to click.
There is such a long road ahead for us, but I definitely know that we are making progress in fulfilling our purpose every day.
