“For more than 100 years the NAACP has advanced essential motion in a central motion that everyone is created equal, and is going to be treated equally,” Biden said on the open the telecast. “And it has [done that] for more than 50 years.”
Harris followed Biden by congratulating the award nominees and recipients for excelling in their crafts during a historically tumultuous year that included the pandemic and social uprising.
“Over the past year, we’ve seen so many actors and artists excel not just in their craft, but in their contributions to our community during this devastating pandemic,” Harris expressed. “And the NAACP has led the way, all the way, fighting for justice, ensuring the well-being of Black communities, providing grants to Black entrepreneurs and advocating for Black students. I thank you.”
The late, great Chadwick Boseman won the award for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Boseman’s widow, Taylor Simone Ledward, accepted the award on the iconic actor’s behalf while imploring the viewing audience to join the fight to help eradicate colon cancer, the deadly disease that cut Boseman’s life short.
Other big winners Saturday included Regé-Jean Page who took home the Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for Shonda Rhimes’ hit series “Bridgerton.” Issa Rae is shining even brighter after winning Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series for the runaway hit HBO series “Insecure.” Bad Boys For Life stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence won Outstanding Motion Picture.
