Be The Match® takes on the sickle cell crisis

What was your next course of action to get the medical help Ruby needed?

We were sent to Dallas and went to the stem cell clinic there. They got Ruby’s blood samples and put her DNA into the Be The Match Registry. … They called me back about a week-and-a-half later and told me that, out of all the donors in the whole world, they couldn’t find a [suitable] match for Ruby. … It was devastating. From that point, Be The Match reached out to me, and we started working together to spread awareness for these kids and adults who are looking for matches.

As a mom, what has it been like for you?

It’s definitely been a struggle. I am her advocate … and we have to be prepared to grab a bag and rush to the hospital at any given time. It’s heartbreaking to see what she has to go through, but she keeps coming out of [the procedures] smiling. She’s definitely a warrior.
