Salon owner Nadia Vassell gives keys to making it in the hair industry

How do you handle policies and keep a level of professionalism in your business?

I do have policies in place for customers and for the people who work in the salon. It helps the salon flow a bit better and presents it as a professional place. But my policies are not as strict as some others you may see. I think as a professional hairstylist, I like to give the entire treatment, it’s a whole experience. I want them to enjoy being in a salon environment that respects their time.

How do you go about building relationships with clients?

You have to be authentic and real with no expectations. It needs to be a trusting relationship and be welcoming and nonjudgmental. I am selling a service, but it has to be something beneficial to the client.

What should an up-and-coming stylist do to make it in this industry?

Be consistent, show up on time, and be respectful of people’s time. Don’t overbook yourself trying to make extra money, and continue to work on your craft. … You have to invest in yourself in order to see growth.
