10 US cities with high murder rates

Los Angeles: In LA, Homicides are up 25% so far in 2021. In South Central Los Angeles, murders have jumped 50% over the same time last year. There were 254 killings recorded in LA in 2019 and 349 in 2020.

Memphis, Tennessee: In Memphis, as of July 12, 2021, there were 159 homicides compared to 127 at the same time last year. The city set a record in 2020 with 323 homicides. At one point in February 2021, there had been a total of 55 homicides in Memphis.


Oakland, California: Just mid-year, Oakland has reached nearly 70 homicides in 2021. In 2020, Oakland counted 100 homicides, representing a 47% uptick from 2019. Presently the city is on track to see a 30% jump over last year’s homicide count, which would be nearly double the homicide rate of just two years prior.

New York: In New York, the murder rate rose 47% in 2020 from 2019, representing 468 people murdered. By April 2021, 299 people have been shot, a 54% increase over the same time last and 92 people had been murdered, which is a 20 % increase from last year
