Dave Chappelle’s pairing with streaming goliath Netflix has been a cash windfall for both powerful entities.
Chappelle has returned Neflix’s $60 million investment in him — and then some — with his previous five stand-up specials “The Age Of Spin,” “Deep In The Heart Of Texas,” “Equanimity,” “The Bird Revelation,” and “Sticks & Stones.” Moreover, the televised events have translated into critical acclaim and three Emmy nominations.
The two are pulling out all the stops for the sixth installment of Chappelle’s stage events, “The Closer,” with a hilarious promo that has Chappelle cursing out veteran actor Morgan Freeman.
The two towering entertainers are paired up as the two are driving down an open road between an endless stretch of cornfields. Freeman, who is nearly as famous for his narrations as he is for his Oscar-winning career, narrates the promo.
“This is Dave. He tells jokes for a living,” Freeman begins. “Driving down these country roads is a lot like a meditation … he is deep in thought, back in the trance, five specials in this many years, how do you close a body of work that profound?”
Initially, only Chappelle is shown driving as Freeman’s famous baritone voice plays in the background. But when Freeman continues on about the enormity of the moment, Chappelle snaps.
Chappelle suddenly slams on the brakes of his truck and yells, “Will you shut the f— up, Morgan Freeman?!”
The camera then pans over at Freeman who was riding and narrating on the passenger side the entire time.
After Morgan offers up a meek apology for getting on Chappelle’s nerves, Chappelle accepts with “it’s all right” as the two continue on their journey down the road.
