Sex is one of the most natural human acts and the level of sexual desire varies from person to person.

Often, we seek to evaluate our sexual activity by wanting to evaluate whether we are “normal” when compared to other people in regards to our own sexual activity. Research shows that married Americans reported having sex an average of five times a month, compared to live-in couples, which are intimate around 6.5 times per month. Individuals that have never been married or are not cohabiting have sex on average at much lower rates of less than once a week.


Having sex is very important and can have major health benefits, particularly before sleep. Here are seven reasons why sex before sleep can improve one’s health.

Stress: Research has demonstrated that having sex before going to sleep can aid in reducing stress. A 2016 study conducted by researchers at the University of Ottawa suggests engaging in sexual intercourse before sleep can decrease stress by increasing endorphins and other hormones that lift a person’s mood. As s a form of exercise, it can also help calm you down. Endorphins are produced by your pituitary gland and central nervous system and act to intensify feelings of pleasure and well-being.


Insomnia: Sex before sleep can also help people who have a hard time going to or staying asleep at night. It has also been determined that adults report that they sleep better after having sex that led to climax. This was confirmed in a study conducted by scientists in Australia.

Help Control Blood Pressure: Given that sexual activity is a form of exercise, it can also aid to calm you down. A study published in the journal, Biological Psychology, conducted in Scotland, established that sexual activity thwarts increases in blood pressure during stressful events. There have been numerous studies that demonstrate sexual intercourse and not masturbation, lowers systolic blood pressure — the first number on your blood pressure test.

Lowers Heart Attack Risk: Knowing that sex is a form of exercise and lowers systolic blood pressure, it is only reasonable that it also can reduce one’s risk of heart attack if engagement occurs before going to sleep. Thus, having sex before going to sleep is good medicine for one’s heart as it helps keep a person’s estrogen and testosterone levels in balance. One study concluded that men who had sex at least twice a week were half as likely to die of heart disease as when compared to men who had sex rarely.
