Charron Monaye knows what it means to be a struggling writer. Embarking on her journey to become an entrepreneur and writer, she was broke, had no business knowledge, and was clueless regarding marketing. A single mother going through a divorce and facing eviction, there was little hope in sight. The only thing she possessed was a composition book of poetry and a desire to share her story, hoping to sell enough books to provide for her children. Today, Monaye is the book agent for Evelyn Braxton and has successfully established herself in the industry.
Rolling out had the opportunity to discuss Monaye’s Pen Legacy publishing company, what inspires her, and tips for first-time authors.
What led you to start a publishing company?
My sorority sister, Summer Willow Fitch, is responsible for me deciding to form my publishing company, Pen Legacy. At the time, I was a published author under Purposeful Publishing and doing very well in the industry. However, with my experience and her desire to become an author, she encouraged me to “give back” to others who had dreams of becoming authors, as well.
What is the book writing process, and how long does it typically take?
The book writing process is different for everyone. Some people like to write their book using an outline they created of their ideas. Others like to freestyle write as if they are having a conversation. Some people can write a book in three years; for others, it may only take 30 days. That’s the beauty of the writing process; it’s not one-size-fits-all.
