Megan Thee Stallion’s stellar year continues. She was awarded the 2021 Glamour Woman of the Year Award in New York on Nov. 8, 2021, at Rockefeller Center. During her acceptance speech, the tearful rapper thanked her late mother and grandmother for making her the successful woman she is today.
Megan’s mother, Holly Thomas succumbed in 2019 to brain cancer. She was once an aspiring MC herself and passed her gifts of brains and lyrics down to her daughter. Her grandmother, whom Megan called “Big Mama” transitioned two weeks after her daughter.
“I’ve been in tears all night because everyone is so inspiring. I also want to thank my mom, that’s my woman. I want to thank my mom because she taught me how to be the woman that I am today. She’s my best friend, my manager, she was my everything, and I know she’s so proud of me today,” Megan Thee Stallion tearfully stated.
Megan made a promise to her grandmother as well that she would get an education despite being successful in music.
“She was like, ‘Megan I don’t give a damn how many songs you write as long as you get that degree.’ So, I said, ‘You know what, I don’t give a damn how many songs I write, I’m going to stay in school because I know my mom and my big momma are watching me and that’s what they would want me to do,’” she said.
Megan will graduate from Texas Southern University on Dec. 11, 2021, with a bachelor’s in health administration. A champion for women, Megan dedicated the honor to all women and also accepted the award under her legal name, Megan Pete, to showcase she is more than just her rap persona.
