Shanesha Scott discusses her health journey and entrepreneurship

How has having an autoimmune illness impacted you both personally and professionally?

I was diagnosed with polymyositis within a day of opening my life coaching business. I had to take a step back and 100% focus on my health and getting better. Polymyositis impacts muscles so much so that I had to use a walking cane for months. Both professionally and personally, it’s had significant adverse effects on my life. I take it one day at a time.

How are you leveraging technology to grow your business?

Technology has been heaven-sent for me especially dealing with polymyositis. Technological advancement has given my business endless opportunities to reach people, like using Zoom to meet with clients or email. Technology has even helped me self-publish my first book. Most clients find me through my social media accounts. Having platforms like YouTube is great because you can find anything you want to learn about on YouTube.

Describe how you set goals and evaluate your success.

I’ve always used a journal or, more recently, a vision board. I remember I made a Facebook post in 2011 about wanting to move to Dallas and get into the fashion and makeup industry. Fast-forward to 2014, I had moved to Dallas and had become a plus-size model and opened my makeup artistry business. My biggest thing is to always, at minimum, go for all of your dreams and aspirations. Don’t be afraid of failing. Also, tune out the naysayers. Do what you want to do. We all have different journeys in life. Follow your heart’s desires. It has worked for me!

Why is lifelong learning important to you?

Lifelong learning is essential because change is constant. Just look at the advancement of technology. To stay with the times, I constantly am looking for knowledge, which is one reason I recently went to get my certification in life coaching. I take pride in doing my research in areas I want to know more about.
