Jai Buchanan is an R&B artist from Alabama trying to establish himself in the music industry.


Recently, he sat down with rolling out to talk about his climb in the industry and fighting the urge to jump on trends.


When did you first get into music?

Music has always been a way of expressing how I feel at a particular time and particular place in my life. I’d say when I was 14, I got a real glimpse into the music industry as a whole, as a business. When I had the chance to work with MTV, they were looking for teens who were trying to chase their dreams while not letting distractions get to them in the process of doing so. I think that’s even more relevant today. Because [of] COVID, in particular, we were all stuck in the house, and there was no going to the club and turning up like that, for real. So you had to look into yourself and … see, “What’s going on with Jai?” During that period, I feel like I accelerated growth within myself just because I was with myself all the time.


What are you working on? What’s the latest project you dropped?

I’m trying to say a lot without saying too much. For one, I have a single coming out. It’s going to be called “Sharpshooter.” I’m super excited for this record, I’ve had it for three months and we finally got it recorded, got it done, mastered, everything. I’m particularly excited about this one because I really feel like it shows my growth so much as an artist. Coming out of 2020 and 2021, there was a lot of things that we all had to work on. For me, I was working on my writing skills, performing. There’s a lot to being an artist. I think that’s what a lot of people will just maybe overlook or don’t understand. This is a lot of s—.
