Big-name coaches and players are coming to HBCUs; now what?

Blakeney brought national attention to the Bison when he landed 5-star center Makur Maker in July 2020. Maker suffered a groin injury after the first two games of the season before being shut down. He decided to go professional and currently plays with the Sydney Kings in Australia.

Hercy Miller, the son of mogul Master P, committed to Tennessee State over Power 5 programs like UCLA, USC, LSU and Missouri in March 2021. After playing six games, Miller suffered a season-ending lower body injury. He entered the transfer portal soon after due to a lack of medical resources.

“We [need to make it where we] have the same facilities,” Blakeney said. “We have the same locker room, we have the same training equipment, we have the same offices. All of those things are really important to today’s athlete as we’re moving forward with recruiting. We’re trying to position ourselves in a way that we can have those things set up for success for our program.”

Blakeney has the opportunity to lead his program further into the public spotlight as Howard plays on NBC and at NBA All-Star Weekend in January and February.
