Kel Mitchell opens up about the moment he left Chicago to continue acting

Who were your big homies? Who were the people that helped you pray through your tough times?

There’s an evangelist named Ruth Brown that definitely helped me. She’s in Heaven now, but she helped me throughout my life when I was on this new walk. She prayed with me every night. Sometimes, it’d be me coming from the club, and she was praying with me on the phone. My pastor right now shows me how to grow spiritually by teaching me the Word of God, showing me how the Word of God works in our life.

When I was younger, [it was] my parents, but also cousins that helped me.

I remember when my uncle was murdered. I was very upset right when that happened. I was just like, “Man.” I was thinking of revenge and all this stuff. I saw my cousins, and they were talking.

I was like, “Yo, so what are we doing? What’s up?” And [they] were like, “No, you going to be on TV.”

I remember my cousin telling me that.

He said, “Go do that. I want you to do that because he would have loved that and for you to continue to do that.”
