Sister with Superpower Cheyenne Parker will be back on the court at full strength for the Atlanta Dream this upcoming season.
In 2021, Parker had to end her season pre-maturely around the Olympic break due to the progress of her pregnancy. In December, she gave birth to her daughter Naomi and she has swiftly worked her way back into playing shape to be ready for the Dream’s May 7 season opener against the Dallas Wings.
After a recent practice, Parker stopped by rolling out to discuss motherhood and the Dream’s new season.
Coming back from giving birth, how are you feeling personally, physically and mentally?
I’m just feeling super excited for the season.
Just to be able to play again, without the baby in my stomach is different, but I’m just getting back to myself. Getting that feeling back, being a dominant presence in the post. So it’s been a journey, and it’s still a journey, but I’m embracing it. I’m embracing the tough times. I’m embracing the hard times because I know it’s just going to get me better.
What does that say about the magic of the players in this league you all can give birth and get right back to it?
Well, for one it’s saying that women are amazing, incredible creatures. But just on the basketball side, basketball players have always had a side of toughness, so that’s really all we were tapping into is that toughness we carried.
I heard you were even considering playing with Athletes Unlimited two months after giving birth? Is that an option you’d consider for next year in the offseason?
It really all depends on who’s open, what teams are open, but yeah. I definitely did want to [play in Athletes Unlimited] just so I can get back in shape, but it was a little too soon. Maybe next season, we’ll see.
How has motherhood changed your perspective and mindset with basketball and off the court?
In so many ways. Like now, instead of ball is life, my daughter’s my life and ball is just a part of my life that I use to take care of her. She’s my new motivation. So now it’s like everything is Naomi.
How is it having that village, like your mother and spouse, help take care of Naomi?
It’s huge. If it wasn’t for my mom and my spouse, I wouldn’t be able to do what I’m doing right now. So I’m truly thankful to just have them so that I continue my career.
When you see the young post players like Naz Hillmon, what are the encouraging things you’re seeing from rookies so far?
Man, both my rookies are amazing. I love their energy, their effort. Naz is great, she’s strong. She’s very strong-willed, and I just really love her competitive age.
How does this season’s team compare to last year?
Honestly, it’s like day and night … I’m in great spirits. My teammates are great. The staff is great.
