Things are looking up, as U.S. gas prices are going down.
Recently, President Joe Biden’s coordinator for energy security, Amos Hochstein, sat with rolling out to discuss the decreasing cost of fuel.
What’s the latest update on gas prices?
Alright, so here’s where things were just a few weeks ago; we were all suffering – everybody. Everybody listening to this, myself included, my family and families across the country. We were buying gasoline at like $5 a gallon, which was really high and really hard on people. It’s really high compared to everything we’ve seen last year.
It was a result of [prices] just going up every month, going up a little bit more. Since the war started in Ukraine, the American people were suffering because of something happening so far away, and President Biden is hammering me like, “You got to do everything we can. We have to get these prices down. We got to do something about it.”
So we took a lot of actions, and we can go into that, but the bottom line is, for the last 35 days, literally every single day, gasoline prices are going down every day. Today, gasoline prices on average in America are about $4.47, [or] something like that. It used to be over five dollars, but if you look not just at the average, but what’s the most common price for most Americans, over 20,000 gas stations are actually lower than $4. So we’re already at $3.99. I even saw one gas station, just today, and there was a $2.99 [sign]. So I’m not saying that’s what you’re going to see. You’re going to have to drive pretty far from your homes, both to get that one gas station, but that’s the direction. And President Biden told me the other day, I thought he’d say, “Almost good job getting the price down in the country,” but he was just like, “It’s still too high. And I still expect you to bring these gas prices down even further.” So we’re going to continue to work at it.
What advice you can give to the average American consumer about gas?
First of all, just know you have a President who really feels you and feels that pain. He’s talking to all the staff and telling us, “You have to bring this down as much as we can.” We’re going to do everything we can to bring those prices down. Do your research a little bit. There are all kinds of apps there that tell you where the cheapest gas station is. Here’s the problem, sometimes you drive around, you see a gas station that says $4.99, you drive five more blocks and it says $4.39 and the next one says $3.99.
What’s going on here?
Some of these companies are actually holding on to the profits … as the consumer, we have to say, “We aren’t getting gas from your station until you bring down your prices.”
