Detroit native, J. Brown, has cultivated a unique sound that is continuing to reverberate around the world. His latest album, Chapter & Verse, is giving his fans an old-school R&B feel, as he goes back to the music that he grew up listening to.
Brown spoke with rolling out about his album and his process of making music.
Tell us about your album.
It’s just an R&B album that is near and dear to my heart because I’m focusing on all the stuff that I love to talk about. We currently have the deluxe version out right now, so if y’all could be so kind to check it out, it’s on all platforms. It’s R&B at its finest.
What was it like creating this project?
This project has a collective of smart individuals who knew what they were doing. To be honest with you, we all enjoy talking about love songs and writing them and good things like that, but I think on this particular album, we just focused on what we all love to talk about, which is love. If you listen to each song, I guarantee you will take away something great and relatable.
What makes this project special?
This is my first album. [There’s] nothing really to compare it to, but I’ve been working on it for a while. It’s different for sure because we’re taking it back to that old-school feel. Not that I don’t do the new-school feel or the modern sound, which I do, but I wanted to focus on what I grew up on, so that’s what people will take when they listen to it.
How would you describe your process of making music?
It’s whatever I feel. It could happen at any given moment, but it’s mostly just stuff that I feel is intriguing to the point where I can write it down or record it. It could be anything from something on the wall or just the conversation and I turn that into something, but it has to be an experience. Otherwise, there’s no point in writing or creating it.
