On Jan. 24, nominations for the 2023 Oscars were revealed, and as many fan-favorite films were recognized, others were left out the running. One, in particular, was Till, a movie that tells the story of Emmett Till’s abduction and lynching in 1955.
According to “TMZ,” Till’s family was devastated about the movie being overlooked in any Oscar category.
Till’s cousin and co-founder of the Emmett Till Legacy Foundation, Deborah Watts, told “TMZ” that the family is disappointed that the movie lead by actress Danielle Deadwyler didn’t receive any nominations. Deadwyler played Till’s mother in the movie.
Watts gave Deadwyler her flowers, saying she “embodied and delivered the true essence of our cousin, a loving and courageous mother, Mamie Till Mobley. She reached deeply and poured her heart and soul in this role as she embraced us intimately like no other while transforming into Mamie and bringing her true essence and story to life.”

If Danielle Deadwyler couldn’t get nominated for her performance in “Till” portraying such a monumental figure in American history with poise and heart, then a black woman will NEVER win Best Actress again! That was the perfect role and performance.#Oscars #OscarNominations2023

Watts says that the foundation and its community of supporters will continue to tell Till’s and Mobley’s stories “with or without any awards.”
