Closing out Black History Month in a big way, General Motor’s African American Ancestry Network (GMAAN) hosted their 17th Annual Black History Month Celebration on Friday, February 24 at Motor City Casino in Detroit. This year’s event embraced the theme “HOMECOMING” paying homage to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Black excellence. The event recognized five inspirational leaders for their excellence in entrepreneurship, S.T.E.A.M., lifetime achievement, marketing—and blazing a trail for other leaders to follow. The 2023 honorees included:

  • Tommey Walker Jr., Founder of DETROIT VS. EVERYBODY (Excellence in Entrepreneurship Awardee)
  • Dr. D’Wayne Edwards, President of Pensole Lewis College of Business and Design (Excellence in S.T.E.A.M Awardee)
  • Dr. William F. Pickard, Chairman of Global Automotive Alliance (Lifetime Achievement Awardee)
  • Steven Majoros, Chief Marketing Officer for Chevrolet (Excellence in Marketing Awardee)

The celebration included a special presentation from the Renaissance High School Marching Band as well as a fireside chat, featuring National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) president, Dr. Ben Chavis and actor, producer, and author, Terrence J, who was surprised and honored with the Trailblazer award. The event was made possible by Chevrolet, S&P Global, AAA, United Talent Agency (UTA) and Actalent.
