The scholarship helps HBCU students who are pursuing music degrees, such as music business, songwriting and production. This year, five HBCU students will be selected to participate in the program and each will be awarded a $10,000 scholarship.
“With the support of our incredible DEI team Zing Shaw, Ryan Butler and Ricky Lyon, we are committed to leveling the playing field for the next generation of Black musicians and professionals by providing them with invaluable mentorship opportunities and experiences to prepare them for careers in the music industry,” Rico Love shared on the Recording Academy website. He is the vice chair of the Recording Academy board of trustees and BMC chair.
HBCUs have long been leaders in music education. Legendary artists such as Stevie Wonder, Sean “Diddy” Combs and Toni Braxton all attended HBCUs. The scholarship program helps to ensure that these institutions continue to produce the next generation of music industry leaders.
