Nathan Fluellen hosted a successful gathering of Black surfers at Huntington Beach in California for the second annual A Great Day in the Stoke.
Competition participants came from Black surf collectives around the world including South Africa. BRICK!, a longtime affiliate and DJ of rapper KYLE as well as the producer of Baby Keem and Travis Scott’s “Durag Activity,” also competed as a member of the Ebony Beach Club.
It was Julian Williams, however, who dominated the day, as the surfer on the verge of making history as the first Black Hawaiian to qualify for the longboard and shortboard professional tour, won both the men’s competitions at A Great Day in the Stoke.
It was a day when culture and the ocean collided. The participants were introduced to F.L.Y.’s “Swag Surfin’,” a DJ sponsored by Red Bull, played mixes throughout the day, free surf lessons were given as well as free sunscreen courtesy of Black Girl Sunscreen. Rapper Saba was also in attendance.
