Shantel Williams, affectionately known as the “Sassy Accountant,” is a powerhouse in the world of accounting. With over 15 years of expertise, Williams is the driving force behind The Firm ALP. Her knowledge spans a range of accounting areas, from intricate small business taxation to payroll management, individual tax return preparation, and IRS resolutions.
Holding credentials across 50 states, Williams’ expertise allows her to reach clients beyond her downtown Orlando, Florida, office. Shantel talked with rolling out about what excites her about her work, why mentors are important, and offered advice for young women who aspire to be business owners.
What excites you about your job?
I find immense fulfillment in supporting others. [After] starting my career at 18 without guidance, I appreciate the value of mentorship. Helping people avoid mistakes, fostering financial independence, and empowering individuals who look like me in their pursuits, is deeply rewarding. I envision a legacy where my impact far extends my current reach, helping people of all backgrounds find opportunities to grow and thrive.
How does your company differentiate itself from its competitors?
Our company provides personalized services to businesses, regardless of size. Whether you’re a small startup or a Fortune 500 company, we tailor our services to suit your unique needs. Our pricing model is flexible, ensuring accessibility for all. Additionally, we collaborate with financial advisors, coaches, and mentors, forming a comprehensive support network. We prioritize community development, working with organizations like the Small Business Association, to specifically focus on empowering Black entrepreneurs. We aim to uplift our clients and foster long-term success through a holistic approach.
Why is it important to secure a mentor?
A mentor is akin to a parental figure in your business world. They can guide you from [making] mistakes they’ve made or seen others make, saving you time and money. Many individuals struggle to break through due to a lack of experience. A mentor can help you refine your message, products and services. In addition, mentors help build your confidence, enabling you to navigate networking events, meetings and conferences effectively. A trusted guide who knows you can elevate every aspect of your professional life.
What advice do you have for others seeking success?
I encourage you to attend an HBCU, whether it is virtually or on campus. I firmly believe being taught by someone who looks like you has immeasurable benefits. Embrace feedback, seek mentors from diverse backgrounds, and be receptive to criticism. Success requires humility, continuous learning, and a willingness to receive feedback.
What would you like your legacy to be?
I aspire to be known as someone who genuinely cared, [and] creat[ed] a familial atmosphere wherever I went. Money was secondary; it was about empowering others. I want to be known for breaking barriers for people who resemble me, providing opportunities, and fostering trust within our community. I aim to inspire others to overcome generational financial challenges, showing them a path to a brighter financial future.
