This was a good weekend for a handful of Black celebrities during Black History Month. Patrick Mahomes II won his third Super Bowl, Usher released his new album and performed at halftime, Koryn Hawthorne released the No. 1 gospel album on iTunes and Flau’jae Johnson enjoyed four big-time accomplishments in the timespan.
As her former on-air mentor Jermaine Dupri narrated Usher’s halftime show, Johnson starred in a local Super Bowl commercial on Feb. 11. In the commercial, Johnson rapped a jingle for accident attorney Gordon McKernan.

Earlier in the day, Johnson scored 16 points in LSU’s 85-66 win over Alabama.
On Feb. 9, she released her latest four-song EP, 4 WAVE.
On the project, Johnson gets vulnerable about the state of her love life. The 20-year-old is in a different predicament as a millionaire college student-athlete. It’s a time when many young adults are still learning about themselves and the prior elements included along with fame only complicate things more. She claims some of her past love interests only wanted to be intimate on a physical level when she wanted something more. She also raps about being hesitant about trusting a partner because she didn’t want to get her heart broken again. The music’s sound and message resemble rap superstar Rod Wave, who she opened for in December in Atlanta.
The EP ends with “4 WAVE FREESTYLE,” which is much more reminiscent of her popular singles full of flexing bars. Even on the more upbeat track, she still makes subtle references to relationships not working out. Johnson’s new project is good because of the beat selection, her rapping ability and the fact a majority of her bars can be verified from what the public sees in her life as a famous person.
To start off her action-packed weekend, Johnson led LSU to another win with a team-high 17 points to go along with four rebounds in the Tigers’ 85-62 win over Vanderbilt.
Needless to say, it was a weekend of four big events, for Ms. “Big 4” herself.
