On February 13, 2024, the Detroit Athletic Club (DAC) played host to the sold-out 37th Annual National Black Supplier Conference presented by Stellantis. Organized by The National Business League (NBL) and the Detroit Black Chamber of Commerce (DBCC), this event brought together hundreds of Black businesses and corporations, creating a vibrant platform for networking, insights, and celebration.
The conference’s success was underscored by the unwavering support of all who attended. The enthusiasm and commitment of the community to foster collaboration and growth was front and center for all to witness. A standout moment of the conference was the keynote address delivered by Joe Anderson, Chairman of TAG Holdings, a $1 Billion Black-owned manufacturing business. Mr. Anderson’s insightful remarks resonated with attendees, leaving a lasting impact and inspiring a collective commitment to excellence in their endeavors.
The conference also offered valuable networking opportunities with over 100 corporate and private-sector buyers and executives in attendance. The fireside chat, moderated by Carol Cain, featured founder and CEO of Dunamis Charge Natalie King, founder and principal of Glidelane Consulting Chris Genteel, and Travis Spenser, head of supplier diversity and warranty recovery at Ford Motor Company. The chat offered valuable insights on navigating supplier development amidst challenges in diversity, equity, and inclusion. The discussions were both enlightening and empowering, showcasing a dedication to overcoming obstacles and fostering a more inclusive business environment.
A special commendation was extended to the NBL’s National Black Supplier Development Program (NBSDP) and the 2024 graduating class: Fred Edmonds, George Hunter, Lloyd Jackson, Lorron James, George Bares, Roderick Frazier, Vickie Lewis, Johnnie Chandler, Robert C. Bush, and Rashaan Freeman. This 2024 cohort was celebrated for their remarkable accomplishments and their dynamic pitches during the live pitch competition, which showcased the graduates innovative ideas and significant potential for future business contracts.
Acknowledging the pivotal role of leadership and collaboration, a special “thank-you” was given to Dr. Forrest Carter, director of the National Black Supplier Program, DBCC members Crystal Gunn, Bartel Welch, Chad Rhodes, Dr. Danielle Cato, Dr. Cecil Forbes, Orena Perry, Diamond Reynolds, Cydney Hill, Sergio Grady, and the esteemed manager, Business Resource Groups and Global Coordination at Stellantis, Gregory Hawkins. Corporate partners Comerica Bank, Cummins, DTE Energy, Ford, GM, Lear, Magna, and Toyota were also recognized for their resolute dedication and support in bringing the conference to fruition.
The 37th Annual National Black Supplier Conference was a resounding success, symbolizing collaboration, inspiration, and progress within the Black business community. The event served as a testament to the resilience and determination of Black-owned businesses and corporations, leaving a legacy of empowerment and opportunity for years to come.
