Kimberly Brown understands the legend she carries daily.
The daughter of NFL and civil rights legend Jim Brown still shows up to the Super Bowl and other public events to keep his legacy alive. Jim Brown died of natural causes at 87 in May 2023.
At an event hosted by Fathead and Shannon Sharpe during Super Bowl LVIII week in Las Vegas, Kimberly Brown spoke to rolling out about her father and her own football career.
Why was it important for you to come out here tonight and support Shannon Sharpe?
Of course, I know Shannon, and it’s the Super Bowl so I had to come and support. I had to support Jamie Fritz with his new company, Interstate 15. I’m excited to be here. I come to the Super Bowl every year, and this is the first that my dad’s not in attendance.
Speaking of your father, what are some ways we can honor his legacy every February?
Feb. 17 is his birthday.
Happy birthday to him.
Yeah, exactly.
How can we celebrate him? Continuing his legacy [by] letting people know what my father was about and what he stood for. That would honor him.
What do you remember from the day he passed away?
I was by myself. I was alone. I got the call before it broke [to] media. Of course, it was devastating, and I’m going to just leave it at that.
Was it a bit of a relief to hear about it before it went public?
It was. Not hearing about it on the news first.
Yeah, most definitely. I was very thankful for that. It was a family friend who called me. He calls me all the time when somebody passes in our family. He’s the first one, so I appreciate him for doing that.
Sorry for your loss. In honor of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, who do you want to shout out?
I want to shout out myself.
What is it like being a woman in sports?
I play fullback and defensive end [in] the X League for the Austin Sound. I appreciate all of the biological women out here who are taking a stand in sports.
What do you think of the discussion of transwomen participating in women’s sports?
I don’t approve of it at all.
I think it is unfair. [I feel] that it’s very unfair and that they should start their own league instead of trying to infiltrate our own. I swim, and I’m not trying to get into the men’s league. We’re not trying to go up against men because we already know a man is superior to women in sports, ability, and physicality. Just because you’re taking hormones doesn’t mean that you’re a woman. Just because you put on a wig doesn’t make you a woman.
A woman? You’re born like that. That’s God’s gift.
What’s your favorite part of playing football?
Being with my team. Playing with my team, strategizing, working as a team. Working as one, and of course, winning.
How can Black men better support Black women in 2024?
Stand up for us.
How?
If you see any injustices towards women, step in, say something, and do something about it.
Where can people keep up with you?
