On Friday, February 16, Detroit’s Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History was set ablaze with the vibrancy of culture and art, as the General Motors African Ancestry Network (GMAAN) proudly presented “An Evening at the Museum Celebrating the Arts.” One of the evening’s highlights included complimentary entry to the exhibit “Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design,” a homage to the iconic 2x Academy Award-winning American Film Costume Designer and living legend.

For over four decades, Carter has played a pivotal role in shaping the narrative of the Black experience on the silver screen. From the streetwear of ‘Do the Right Thing’ to the regal attire of ‘Coming 2 America,’ her work has been a visual testament to the diversity and richness of African American culture. Her groundbreaking achievements include being the first Black winner of an Oscar in costume design and the first Black woman to clinch two Academy Awards in any category.

The event commenced with a captivating fireside chat between Ruth E. Carter and Gerald Johnson, GM’s Executive Vice President, Global Manufacturing, and Sustainability. The conversation delved into Carter’s illustrious career, focusing on her iconic designs for Marvel’s ‘Black Panther,’ a film that not only brought Afrofuturism into the mainstream but also earned her the coveted Oscar. The discussion provided attendees with a unique insight into the creative process behind some of the most iconic costumes in cinematic history.

The museum was transformed into a gallery showcasing Carter’s celebrated work, offering attendees an immersive experience in the world of Afrofuturism in costume design. The exhibit, which will be open until the end of March, serves as a testament to Carter’s artistic prowess and cultural impact. Attendees were encouraged to explore this extraordinary blend of art and cultural celebration, a visual journey through the lens of a true maestro of costume design.

Ruth E. Carter’s presence at the event was not only limited to the exhibit; she engaged with the audience by signing books and taking photos. Her definitive book, a recounting of her journey, reflects on her origins, from outfitting the cast of ‘School Daze’ alongside Spike Lee to pivotal moments on the set of Steven Spielberg’s ‘Amistad.’ The book also features anecdotes from her collaborations with legendary figures such as Eddie Murphy, Samuel L. Jackson, Angela Bassett, and Halle Berry, providing a glimpse into her passion for history and dedication to highlighting the humanity of the Black experience.

Adding a melodic touch to the evening was Kym Brady, The Urban Violinist, who serenaded the audience with enchanting musical notes. Attendees embraced the event’s theme, dressing in Afrofuturism Chic attire, contributing to the magical ambiance that filled every corner of the venue.

The night was not just about visual and auditory experiences; delectable heavy passed hors d’oeuvres added a culinary dimension to the celebration. Every seat was filled, creating an atmosphere that resonated with appreciation for the arts and the immense contributions of Ruth E. Carter to the world of costume design.

“An Evening at the Museum Celebrating the Arts” was a resounding success, weaving together the threads of history, art, and culture. Ruth E. Carter’s presence and her Afrofuturism-inspired exhibit added an extra layer of significance to this Black History Month event, leaving a lasting impression on all those who were fortunate enough to be part of this memorable evening in Detroit.
