Domonique Simone would be on the Mount Rushmore of black porn starlets if such a thing existed.

Born Deirdre Morrow in Valdosta, Georgia, Simone had dreams of working in fashion and even won a scholarship to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising at the age of 17 in 1988. The next year after turning 18 she answered an ad for figure modeling and soon began modeling for pornographic magazines like Hustler and Players.

By the end of 1990’s, Simone had become one of the most popular black actresses in the adult industry starring in over 200 films and even crossing over into some mainstream work appearing in the movie, Fear of a Black Hat, as well as videos for artists like Brian McKnight, Montell Jordan and Snoop Dogg.

Simone retired from the industry in 2007 and was quickly inducted into the AVN Hall of Fame shortly thereafter and was just named as a 2024 inductee in the Urban X Awards Hall of Fame.

We spoke with Simone about her career and recently released book, A Star Is Porn.

What are three words you would use to describe yourself?
Resilient, Enlightened, Visionary.

How did you find your way into the adult film industry, and when did you know it was time to leave?
My path into the industry was not planned; it was a step taken during a challenging time to ensure survival and independence. I transitioned away when I recognized the need to pursue personal growth and new opportunities beyond the industry’s scope.

Please tell us about your new book, A Star Is Porn, and what inspired you to write it?

What are some common misperceptions you’ve found people have about the industry?
A significant misperception is viewing adult film stars through a single lens, disregarding the fact that we, too, lead ordinary lives with dreams and aspirations akin to everyone else. The industry is a profession, and those within it possess diverse backgrounds and ambitions, just like individuals in any other field.

What’s next for Deirdre?
I’m excited about the future. There’s a lot on the horizon, including dreams that are about to be realized. Stay tuned for what’s next!
