R&B luminaries Usher and Babyface will be honored at the Apollo Theater’s upcoming annual spring benefit celebrating the famed theater’s 90th anniversary.

Usher will receive the Apollo’s prestigious Icon Award at the awards ceremony. He expressed his gratitude in being recognized by the historic Harlem, New York theater.

“It’s an honor to be receiving this award from such an iconic and historic cultural institution in New York City — one that has hosted and paved the way for so many prominent people,” the “U Remind Me” singer expressed. “I’m humbled to be this year’s recipient and look forward to seeing everyone soon.”

Legendary singer-songwriter Babyface will receive the inaugural Legacy Award in addition to being inducted into Apollo’s Walk of Fame, a recognition that the Grammy Award-winning producer doesn’t take lightly given the theater’s history.

“I am humbled to receive the inaugural Legacy Award,” Babyface said in a statement. “For nearly a century, the theater has been a constant symbol of excellence in Black entertainment. So, for The Apollo to honor my legacy feels nothing short of amazing.”

In its almost 100-year history, the Apollo Theater has long been an important piece of Black cultural history. Dating back to the Harlem Renaissance, the theater has played host to every phase of Black creative evolution and has continued to be a present-day mainstay.

“The Apollo has stood as an enduring beacon in Harlem, nurturing artists, fostering education, and sparking creativity across the world,” said the Apollo’s President & CEO Michelle Ebanks. “I’m thrilled to celebrate the ongoing legacy of our organization and our commitment to arts and education at the Spring Benefit. It will be an unforgettable evening of performances and a time to honor our cultural icons.”

Apollo Theater’s annual spring benefit will take place on June 11 and is open to the public. Tickets are available for purchase on the theater’s website.
