In a vibrant celebration of Black Music Month, NPR Music will feature an all-Black women lineup, showcasing a rich tapestry of talent that spans genres and generations. This June, the popular Tiny Desk concert series will honor the contributions and legacies of these artists, aligning with the theme ‘Giving women their flowers.’

A celebration of black girl magic

The lineup includes a roster of iconic and emerging artists such as Tems, Chaka Khan, Tierra Whack, Kierra Sheard, Lakecia Benjamin, Meshell Ndegeocello, Brittney Spencer, SWV, and Flo Milli. These performances, starting June 3, promise to take viewers on a musical journey that not only entertains but also pays homage to the enduring influence of Black women in music.

Floral tributes and intimate insights

Each artist will be presented with their favorite flowers after their performance, symbolizing appreciation for their artistic contributions. Additionally, NPR Music will extend the celebration through short-form video interviews on Instagram, offering fans a glimpse into the musical journeys and personal experiences of these talented women.

Legacy of the Tiny Desk series

Since its inception in 2008, the Tiny Desk concert series has become a cultural phenomenon, attracting over 16 million monthly viewers and amassing more than 45 million monthly views. The series has featured a diverse array of artists, including Sean Paul, Nelly Furtado, and Ne-Yo, and continues to be a platform for both established and up-and-coming musicians.

Black Music Month: a historical perspective

Black Music Month, also known as African American Music Appreciation Month, was first recognized by President Jimmy Carter in 1979. Now in its 45th year, the month of June is dedicated to acknowledging and celebrating the profound impact of Black music on American culture, with NPR Music’s Tiny Desk series playing a pivotal role in this year’s festivities.
