Two decades after its premiere, Halle Berry is paying tribute to her iconic role as Catwoman. The Oscar-winning actress took to Instagram to share heartfelt memories, posting photos featuring herself and her rescue cats. “And STILL… meow!” she captioned the images, reflecting on the significance of the character in her life.

A tribute to an iconic character

In her post, Berry expressed her deep connection to the character, stating, “It’s been 20 years today since I had the honor of bringing this iconic character to life. She will always be close to my heart and I will forever be Patience Phillips aka CATWOMAN!” Her tribute highlights the lasting impact of the role, despite the film’s mixed reception.

A financial flop but a personal win

Released in 2004, Catwoman was considered a financial disappointment, grossing $82.1 million against a $100 million budget. Critics were not kind either, but Berry has no regrets about taking on the role. She also mentioned the substantial paycheck that changed her life.

Breaking barriers in Hollywood

Berry made history in 2002 as the first Black woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Monster’s Ball. However, she faced challenges in securing roles afterward, as opportunities for Black actresses remained limited. Reflecting on her career, she noted that although her historic win fundamentally changed her, it didn’t change her place in the industry overnight.

Looking ahead

Despite setbacks, including the recent cancellation of her sci-fi film The Mothership by Netflix, Berry continues to forge ahead. She has several projects in the pipeline, including The Union and Never Let Go, both in post-production. Additionally, she is set to star in the psychological thriller The Process and Maude v Maude, alongside Angelina Jolie.

Halle Berry’s journey as Catwoman remains a significant chapter in her career. As she celebrates 20 years of this iconic role, she continues to inspire with her resilience and dedication to her craft.
