Mercy Housing Lakefront is changing lives

On Sept. 19, 2024, Mercy Housing Lakefront hosted their awards ceremony and fundraising event “Moving Forward Together.” More than 250 financial, real estate, government and philanthropic leaders filled Venue West in the West Town neighborhood of Chicago to celebrate the work of notable Chicagoans and to raise funds to ensure quality affordable housing and resources exist for those who are unhoused  or experiencing housing insecurity.

The evening started with a reception accompanied by the musical backdrop of the über talented violinist Windy Indie. Mark Angelini, president of Mercy Housing Lakefront, welcomed the attendees and shared the organization’s mission.

The honorees for the evening were Third Ward Alderman Pat Dowell, who received the Spirit of Mercy award; Zaldwaynaka “Z” Scott, president of Chicago State University, received the Northern Trust Inspiring Hope award; David Esposito received the More Than a Roof award; and the nonprofit organization ELEVATE was given the Wintrust Partners in Innovation award.

One of the residents of the Carlton Apartments, community health worker James Taylor, shared his story via video during the event. Attendees learned of Taylor’s bout with being unhoused and mental health struggles. Through having stable housing and with the help of others, Taylor was able to transform his life and help others just as he had been helped.

The theme of the evening was embracing community. Taylor was present at the event to provide his perspective of what community means.

”Every face, every person here represents a part of something greater. Community [is] not just a collection of people living in the same space or sharing a few common interests. It’s about building bridges, sharing burdens, celebrating victories and most importantly, giving. Giving is not just about money but our time, our talent, our care. True giving doesn’t always come from a place of abundance. In fact, it often comes from a place of sacrifice. Sometimes the best thing you can give is a listening ear, a word of encouragement when you’re struggling yourself. Other times, it’s a helping hand when you’re running on empty — that kind of giving has the power to spark a connection, to transform someone’s day or even their life,” Taylor said.

Immediately following Taylor’s rousing speech, MHL was able to raise $40,000 for future efforts. Mercy Housing Lakefront’s mission is rooted in developing, financing and operating affordable housing for seniors, families and those who have special needs. They currently own and operate 42 properties in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin, serving more than 7,000 people annually.
