Vice President Kamala Harris plans to return to the Hilltop on Nov. 5. The proud Howard University alum has designated her alma university as her election night headquarters.
On Oct. 29, NBC News confirmed the news, citing reports that Howard University was one of the final choices for where the Democratic nominee will spend the historic evening. However, it is unknown where the vice president will be on campus. According to the news agency, the Harriet Tubman Quadrangle — an all-girls dorm on campus — is the most likely option.
Harris has a deep panhellenic heritage; She crossed in 1986, in which she pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Her line was the 38 Jewels of Iridescent Splendor, and of course featured 38 line sisters. So of course the AKA support is there. Her fellow Divine Nine sisters and fraternity brothers — including Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity — have helped to promote Harris and mobilize votes for the presidential campaign.
“I recognize my time at Howard shaped me into the person I am today,” Harris wrote for The Hilltop, Howard’s school paper. “At Howard, we learn that we have the capacity to be great and also that we have the responsibility to work hard to live up to that potential each day. As celebrate this 100th milestone, please know that President Biden and I remain steadfast in our commitment to supporting HBCUs.”
While Harris was contemplating where to have her election night party, President Joe Biden has decided to spend it in his native Delaware. Harris had the choice to bring it in with President Biden; however, the former California senator opted not to continue utilizing Biden’s headquarters. She instead opted for a place with which she was more familiar and comfortable.
Harris has made several visits to her alma mater during her campaign. The Hilltop, the school’s student newspaper, recently published a message from Harris during Homecoming week. In her statement, she highlighted the necessity of helping Howard and other HBCUs. She has also made stops at other HBCUs, including a stop at Clark Atlanta University.
Election Day is now less than a week away. Make sure you get out and vote.
