Earlier this month. Savannah State wide receiver Da’Shun Mitchell had the game of his life. Even though his team lost, there were reasons to celebrate.
In Savannah State’s season finale, the receiver exploded for 227 yards on 12 receptions in a 35-27 loss to Benedict College. In the same game, quarterback, Jhaydon Sullivan passed for 400 yards.
Both numbers broke previous records. The old passing record was 337 yards set by Antonio Bostick in 2013. Mitchell broke a record set by Shannon Sharpe, the HBCU star and NFL Hall of Famer, more than three decades ago.
Sharpe’s gracious response
The “Club Shay Shay” host, who set his record in 1989, made sure to show Mitchell some love on his platform.
Along with co-host Chad “Ocho Cinco” Johnson, Sharpe put Mitchell’s historic game in Savannah State’s season finale in perspective.
“Da’Shun Mitchell had a hell of a game,” Sharpe said.
“You got to get [the record] back,” Ocho Cinco jokingly responded.
“No, Ocho, I’m glad,” Sharpe replied. “Hopefully, I inspired him. When I was there, I didn’t have anybody to look up to. There weren’t many numbers to chase. I just wanted to set the bar. And after 35 years, he broke it. Salute the young bull.”
Mitchell had an amazing senior year, finishing with 49 receptions, nine touchdowns and 913 yards. He was also named first-team All-SIAC, highlighting just how dominant he was.
Could Mitchell follow Sharpe’s path and excel in the NFL? All the tools are there. Sharpe was taken by the Denver Broncos in the seventh round of the 1990 NFL Draft, 192nd overall, and something similar could easily happen in the 2025 draft with Mitchell.
